Meeting that deadline was critical in order for General Services and the Sterling, Virginia-based contractor, The Christman Company, to create a backdrop for the historic swearing-in of the state’s first Black governor. The State House was greatly praised in its day as one of the country’s finest public buildings. Its exceptional classically inspired interior finishes were undertaken by noted craftsman John Rawlings, formerly of London. Its timber-framed dome was erected by Annapolis architect-builder Joseph Clark. The unusually tall dome comprises a two-stage drum and lantern with splayed pent roof and a lightning rod ornamented by a copper-sheathed carved acorn symbolizing strength.
Governor Moore Signs Housing Legislation to Make Maryland More Affordable
Workers will restore the exterior to its aesthetic from around the time it was built between 1735 and 1736. It is the oldest public building in Annapolis, according to the Maryland State Archives. According to General Services’ records, this is the first large-scale restoration project the historic property has undergone since construction was completed in 1779, Cavey said. The historic Maryland State House dome has been restored and the second phase of the project to rehabilitate the country’s oldest state capital in continuous legislative use is now in progress. The Old Treasury Building, a small structure on the State House grounds, is also getting a face-lift. Ferguson said the alert system would be able to send text messages out in a moment to people who sign up to receive them. It also would have geofencing to send text messages to phones in the area. He said he hoped the system would be in place by the end of the state's legislative session in April.

In 1783 and 1784 it served as the capitol building of the United States Congress of the Confederation, and is where Ratification Day, the formal end of the American Revolutionary War, occurred.

Open in 2006, the National Museum of the Marine Corps is already expanding to include more exhibits and more presentation space. "She is a champion for students, and I'm confident that she is the leader we need to fulfill the promise of creating a world-class public education system for Maryland." The governor's housing package also provides incentives for developers to add affordable housing options in future projects and allows them to exceed density limits. The governor also planned to sign about two dozen other bills into law during a non-public event Thursday. Both measures reflect a national conversation about what books and materials should be publicly available in schools and libraries. Those bills were among the 261 that Gov. Wes Moore (D) signed into law on Thursday. A legislative ethics panel called for Henson to apologize to House Speaker Adrienne Jones and a slew of other lawmakers and asked that she never be assigned to the House Appropriations Committee again.
The building is constructed of Flemish bond brick salvaged from two then-recently burned colonial houses, Bushwood Manor and Cartegena. This is the oldest state capitol still in active use as the seat of government and the only one to have served as the nation’s capital, witnessing important events that ended the American Revolutionary War. The Continental Congress met in its Senate Chamber from November 26, 1783, to August 13, 1784, during which time George Washington appeared to resign his commission as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army.
The eight people in the press room locked the doors, turned out the lights and huddled on the floor. The Maryland State House and neighboring legislative buildings were on lockdown for almost two hours Thursday evening after a man called in to the Annapolis Police Department and said he was approaching the capitol building with a gun. The State House has been the site of multiple significant moments in the nation’s early history. Also during that time, Congress appointed Thomas Jefferson minister plenipotentiary to France at the State House, marking the first diplomatic appointment by the new nation.
HB 538 seeks to incentivize developers to add affordable housing options in future developments and would allow certain development projects to exceed typical density limits if the new development incorporates a certain percentage of affordable housing units. There is no text alert system for those who work in the legislative complex. After the all-clear announcement, Senate President Bill Ferguson (D-Baltimore City) and Houser Speaker Adrienne A. Jones (D-Baltimore County) released a statement, thanking the law enforcement officers who responded. Gov. Wes Moore (D), Lt. Gov. Aruna Miller (D) and Senate President Bill Ferguson (D-Baltimore City) were in the State House at the time of the lockdown. House Speaker Adrienne A. Jones (D-Baltimore County) had left the building moments earlier.

Our family recently spent a wonderful weekend enjoying the historic sites, kid friendly attractions, beautiful parks, delicious food, and warm hospitality of Wilmington, Delaware. Spring is the perfect time to visit Wilmington, as many of the historic homes are opening for the season and the gardens are alive with vibrant flowers and plants. The State House isn’t the only major construction project around State Circle. The Maryland Stadium Authority is overseeing construction of a new Department of Legislative Services Annapolis State Government Complex. The new building is also expected to be completed by the end of next year, said Rachelina Bonacci, an authority spokesperson.
“We and everyone else in the legislative complex are grateful for their presence as we continue to do the people’s work,” they said. The Senate president also noted that bomb threats were sent to state capitols in early January, including in Maryland. The Old Treasury Building, a small structure on the State House grounds, is also getting a facelift.
The museum is situated on a 135 acre campus next to the Marine Corps base in Quantico and located less than one hour south of Washington D.C. It is one of the most beautiful, sobering, and enlightening museums we have visited. We recently visited the National Museum of the American Indian in New York City (read about our adventures here) and less than a week later we were in Washington DC and spent a few hours (and a yummy lunch!) at the Washington Museum. You can also read about our adventures at several other Washington DC museums here. On a recent visit to Annapolis, Maryland, we enjoyed learning all about the history of the state, and significant American history, while touring the State House in the heart of Annapolis.
He was an editor at Roll Call, the Capitol Hill newspaper, for eight years, and for eight years was the editor of E&E Daily, which covers energy and environmental policy on Capitol Hill. For 6 1/2 years Kurtz wrote a weekly column on state politics for Center Maryland and has written for several other Maryland publications as well. Kurtz regularly gives speeches and appears on TV and radio shows to discuss Maryland politics. Across the street in the Miller Senate Office Building, the Finance Committee continued a lengthy voting session while committee members slowly learned of the lockdown. In a statement, Nick Cavey, a spokesperson for the Maryland Department of General Services, which oversees the Maryland Capitol Police, said the lockdown was ordered after the Annapolis police “received a call from an individual threatening to target the Maryland State House. Jones said during the House's Friday session that the state has been working with the Maryland Office of Information systems "for quite a while" on putting a text-alert system in place for the complex.
However, energy from the second storm system will come into play over the southern and central Plains on Saturday. Along with that will come the likelihood of storms with large hail, damaging wind gusts, tornadoes and flash flooding from north-central Texas to northern and western Missouri and southeastern Nebraska. A multiple-day severe weather outbreak packing powerful wind gusts, tornadoes, large hail and flash flooding will pose a significant risk to lives and property in the middle of the United States into Sunday, AccuWeather meteorologists continue to warn. On Friday, the main threat of severe weather, including tornadoes, high winds, hail and flash flooding, will focus on the central Plains, AccuWeather senior storm warning meteorologist Eddie Walker said. The likelihood of violent storms capable of causing injury and property damage will extend into the nighttime hours each night into the weekend, adding to the danger.
Temps stay warm with First Alerts in place due to potential weekend storms
By Sunday, the potential for locally severe or briefly severe thunderstorms will extend for more than 1,000 miles from near the Wisconsin/Illinois border southward to central Texas. Sunday's main threats will be briefly damaging wind gusts, hail and flash flooding. However, a few tornadoes along the zone cannot be ruled out. The last gasp of severe weather with the first storm will pivot into Ontario, Canada, on Saturday with locally severe storms capable of producing damaging wind gusts, hail and brief flooding downpours from Iowa to Wisconsin and the northern parts of Michigan and Illinois. Beyond Sunday, the main outbreak of severe weather will have ended.
Heavy Rain and Flash Flooding Threat in the Central U.S.; Severe Weather in the Southern Plains
The Ozark Mountains are in the middle of the flash flood threat zone, where many people may be camping near small streams or secondary roads prone to high water. While the biggest days for tornadoes will be Friday and Saturday, including the evening hours, any severe thunderstorm can produce a brief tornado from Thursday to Sunday evening. The severe thunderstorms will likely roll through the metro areas of Oklahoma City and Wichita, Kan., during the middle of the night before reaching Dallas; Topeka, Kan.; and Grand Island, Neb., around or before daybreak on Friday.

Warm Pattern, Next Good Chance of Rain is Friday
Some areas will be at risk for severe weather for two or three days in a row. Along with the risk of violent thunderstorms and highly localized flash flooding in the coming days, torrential rain will likely trigger flash flooding on a more regional basis. Locally severe storms will extend as far to the south as northeastern Texas and northwestern Louisiana and as far to the north as southeastern South Dakota and southern Minnesota into Friday night. "Along with the likelihood of multiple tornadoes, there is the potential for a couple of strong, long-track tornadoes in parts of central and southern Iowa and northern Missouri on Friday," Walker stated. That zone extends from southern Arkansas, northward to southeastern Iowa, as far to the west as central Kansas and Oklahoma, and as far to the east as parts of Illinois.
Wednesday evening's forecast with Chief Meteorologist John Ahrens
At this point in the night or early morning, the storms are likely to be moving as a solid line or broken line with high winds as the main threat. We recognize our responsibility to use data and technology for good. The threat of severe weather returning to a portion of Tornado Alley that makes up much of the Great Plains after a lull over the past few years was brought to attention by AccuWeather's long-range team months ago during the spring outlook.
Over the past week, this concern has been reiterated on the company's media platforms, network and app. (WBTV) - One more completely dry day is ahead before rain and storms move in Friday night into the weekend. From there, the storms will press eastward across these states during the overnight hours on Thursday. "One storm will pivot northeastward from the southern Plains to the Upper Midwest into Friday," Rayno explained, "The second storm will swing out from the southern Plains to the Midwest this weekend." The metro areas of Omaha, Nebraska Kansas City, Mo., and Des Moines, Iowa, are close to the high-risk area that includes tornadoes on Friday. In addition to the threats to lives and personal property, power outages will occur and could be lengthy in some areas, depending on the scope of damage to infrastructure.

But there can be two pockets of heavy to locally severe storms in parts of the Midwest and Northeast, as well as the lower Mississippi Valley to Texas. The area of heavy rain and flash flooding may also settle slowly farther to the south over the Central states. Later on Saturday night, in much of the severe weather zone over the central and southern Plains, Walker added that the risk would mainly be for strong wind gusts and flash flooding.
First, few Republicans — including some who oppose Johnson — want to be seen following the lead of the House’s most notorious cranks and bigots. Second, Trump doesn’t want the Republican caucus to turn into an embarrassing circular firing squad while he is running for president. (It’s remarkable that Trump is worried that other Republicans will make him look bad.) Third, Democrats have signaled that they will help Johnson keep his job after he courageously did the right thing. And finally, no one appears to want Johnson’s job who could also get the job. To become speaker last year, Kevin McCarthy agreed to a change in the rules that makes it possible for a single representative to move to “vacate the chair” — that is, trigger a vote on whether to depose the speaker. That’s what happened last year after McCarthy avoided a default on the national debt, kept the government open and committed other alleged outrages.
Column: The Republican Party can still do what’s rational and right. Here’s the proof
No credible evidence has ever emerged to support the conspiracy theories about Dominion and another voting machine firm having helped to ensure Mr. Trump’s defeat. In April, Fox News agreed to pay $787.5 million to settle a defamation suit by Dominion over reports broadcast by Fox that Dominion machines were susceptible to hacking and had flipped votes from Mr. Trump to Mr. Biden. The election on Wednesday of Mr. Johnson, 51, to the post second in line to the presidency has focused new attention on his behind-the-scenes role in trying to overturn the election results on behalf of former President Donald J. Trump.

Johnson has laid out a tentative legislative schedule to approve new spending and take up other pieces of legislation, but things could change quickly as he confronts the realities of governing, especially given the fractious nature of the Republican conference. "We're going to dispense with all the usual ceremonies and celebrations that traditionally follow a new speakership because we have no time for either one," Johnson said. "The American people's business is too urgent in this moment. The hour is late. The crisis is great." Speaking after the vote, Johnson vowed to hit the ground running and get the House back to work. A government shutdown is fast approaching, and the White House has requested a $106 billion emergency aid package for Israel, Ukraine and other priorities.
From Bakersfield to speaker of the House: Kevin McCarthy’s D.C. career in photos
Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s sin in his tormentors’ view, aside from being utterly distrusted by them and Democrats alike, was to rely on Democrats’ votes to raise the nation’s debt ceiling and fund the government, averting defaults and shutdowns. Even so, McCarthy stuck with the usual divided-government playbook, compromising as little as possible with Democrats and poking them in the eye when he could, not least by opening a groundless impeachment inquiry against Biden. Some Republicans have said they would like time to debate whether Mayorkas should be impeached, even though debate time is usually not included in impeachment proceedings. Negotiations were underway between the two parties over whether Schumer may allow that time and give senators in both parties a chance to discuss the impeachment before it is dismissed. Impeachment rules generally allow the Senate majority to decide how to manage the trial, and Schumer has not said exactly what he will do.

More than 34,000 people have been killed in the war in Gaza, with the majority of victims women and children, according to the health ministry. Amid a growing political backlash against Joe Biden’s support for Israel, some US universities have called in police to break up demonstrations against the war, resulting in scuffles and dozens of arrests. House Republicans have long accused elite colleges and universities of skewing left and pursuing a “woke” agenda that tramples on parental rights.
A member of a joint program between the Jewish Theological Seminary and Columbia, he was in the crowd watching Johnson speak. He said he feels safe on campus but understands why others do not and that his roommate booked a last-minute flight home over safety concerns. He remains close to the many lawmakers he recruited and helped get in office and keeps in touch with a nationwide donor network built during years as one of the GOP’s top congressional strategists. Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., a progressive who is a member of the Armed Services Committee, said Sunday he would protect Johnson’s job if members of his far-right flank go through with their threat to oust him. Reached for comment about the House's changing posture toward a motion to vacate, office directed NBC News to recent remarks from Johnson, R-La., which included his saying Saturday that he doesn't walk around the Capitol "being worried about a motion to vacate." His predecessor, Frederick Gillett of Massachusetts, also had the top job for less than five years.

Mainstream conservatives who backed Mr. Johnson said they hoped to quickly move to pull the House out of its funk. Almost immediately after Mr. Johnson was elected, lawmakers began debating a resolution expressing solidarity with Israel and condemning Hamas, which passed overwhelmingly. The vote put him second in line to the presidency, capping an extraordinary period of twists and turns on Capitol Hill. It marked a victory for the far right that has become a dominant force in the Republican Party, which rose up this month to effectively dictate the removal of an establishment speaker and the installation of an arch-conservative replacement. Additionally, since many speakers held office for multiple terms, often with non-consecutive periods, the time listed for each speaker represents the total length of their time as speaker.
McCarthy has not thought about resigning after losing speakership vote
"Our feeling is that they have not acted to restore order on the campus," he said. "This is dangerous. This is not free expression. This is not First Amendment. They are threatening, intimidating." The hearing led to a bipartisan call on Capitol Hill to denounce or demand the resignation of leaders at Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for their responses, which were deemed out of touch. At a December hearing, the interrogation by House GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) of Harvard President Claudine Gay over whether antisemitic remarks should be protected under free speech went viral. While he pulls down $100,000 to $150,000 a speech, according to one political ally, McCarthy could make a good deal more with much less effort by capitalizing on his connections in Washington and Sacramento. McCarthy drew false equivalence between the griping of sour-grape Democrats who lost elections and the pernicious legal and tactical fights Trump and his allies waged to overturn Biden’s victory.
Kevin McCarthy told fellow House Republicans he will not run again for speaker, according to a GOP lawmaker. Gaetz also defended fundraising off of the vote today, saying he was the only Republican member of Congress who rejected money from PACs and lobbyists. You may occasionally receive promotional content from the Los Angeles Times. California Rep. Kevin McCarthy has no business in Congress’ highest office or the presidential line of succession.
Rep. Pete Aguilar , the Democratic caucus chair, will deliver the nominating speech for Jeffries. "We'll be talking about the support and what's necessary to get it," Johnson said. "We have to ensure Vladimir Putin is not successful, and I think all the House Republicans are united in that cause." Stefanik praised Johnson as a "man of deep faith" who is a "titan" on the Judiciary Committee and "dedicated member" of the Armed Services Committee. She said that as vice chair of the Republican Conference, Johnson has "united all of our members to speak clearly and boldly on behalf of the American people." Johnson won the speaker's gavel in a single round of voting, with the support of all Republicans in attendance.
Johnson says that he will bring to the floor “in just a little while” a resolution in support of Israel. “We’re going to show not only Israel but the entire world that the barbarism of Hamas" is "wretched and wrong,” he said. “This affirms the path that we took,” Representative Bob Good of Virginia, one of the eight Republicans who voted to oust former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, tells reporters. “We went through a lot to get here, but we are ready to govern and that will begin right away,” Johnson says in his first news conference as speaker. Mr. Johnson has opposed continued funding for the war in Ukraine, which has emerged as a bitter fault line in the G.O.P. and in the spending battles that he will have to navigate in the coming days. That Democrats would save a Republican speaker is almost inconceivable, and it’s the ultimate evidence that we’ve got a coalition government in the House.
"We need to move swiftly to address our national security needs and to avoid a shutdown in 22 days. Even though we have real disagreements about important issues, there should be mutual effort to find common ground wherever we can," the president said. "This is a time for all of us to act responsibly, and to put the good of the American people and the everyday priorities of American families above any partisanship." First, they are the most visible and authoritative spokesperson for the majority party in the House.

Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio, a founder of the hard-right House Freedom Caucus and someone Mr. Johnson has described as a mentor, was the next member to be elected speaker designate in a secret ballot. He had Mr. Trump and the far right in his corner, but ultimately failed to win over more centrist members of his party who steadfastly refused to support him. And the hard-right Republicans who voted to oust Mr. McCarthy, setting into motion the three-week stretch of chaos that left the House without a leader, said Mr. Johnson’s ascension to the top job made their decision to depose the California Republican worth it. A bloc of Republicans had objected to the speaker bid of Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio, the hard-right co-founder of the Freedom Caucus, because of his role in helping lead Mr. Trump’s efforts to overturn the election. Sen. Sherrod Brown, a Democrat who is facing a tough reelection bid in Ohio, called the impeachment trial a “distraction,” arguing that Republicans should instead support a bipartisan border compromise they scuttled earlier this year.

Rep. Tony Gonzales of Texas, who voted for Majority Leader Steve Scalise on each of the three ballots during House voting last week, said he plans to back Johnson when the lower chamber convenes to elect a new speaker. The four absences mean Johnson will need 215 votes to win the speakership if all members in the chamber vote for a candidate. "Therefore, the Honorable Mike Johnson of the state of Louisiana, having received a majority of the votes cast, is duly elected speaker of the House of Representatives for the 118th Congress," McHenry, the interim speaker, announced after reading the final vote tally.
Central Valley district will vote for a new member of Congress twice in two weeks
Last call came, before the Republicans voted to go to a 15th ballot instead of adjourning — an unexpected opportunity for another viewing party. Former President Donald J. Trump made a crucially timed call to Representative Matt Gaetz on Friday night after the Florida congressman voted “present” and sunk Kevin McCarthy’s 14th effort to be elected House speaker. Those compromises delivered a breakthrough for Mr. McCarthy, who in votes on Friday afternoon won support from a sizable chunk of the Republicans who had consistently refused to back him — though he remained short of the majority to win.

House voting now to pass resolution in support of Israel in war against Hamas
Talking with reporters, he gamely brushed off the notion that his historic and humiliating slog to election — the most protracted such contest since 1859 — foretold any troubles ahead for him in governing with an unruly and narrow majority. The 118th version of the Senate did the same this week, convening for a celebratory induction of new members and the swearing in of re-elected senators on Tuesday, then quickly fleeing the capital for three weeks to allow the House to occupy the political stage alone. While it was long before the dawn of Twitter, super PACs and C-SPAN, things really haven’t changed all that much in Congress. Two Republicans who were absent for personal reasons from votes earlier in the day, Ken Buck of Colorado and Wesley Hunt of Texas, were expected to be back in time for the vote. That would mean Mr. McCarthy needs just two more in his column, and potentially just one if two or more of his opponents do not vote or vote present. “I think the House is in a lot better place with some of the work that’s been done to democratize power out of the speakership, and that’s our goal,” he said.
More From the Los Angeles Times
The speaker is responsible for maintaining decorum in the House and may order the Sergeant-at-Arms to enforce House rules. Historically, there have been several controversial elections to the speakership, such as the contest of 1839. In that case, even though the 26th United States Congress convened on December 2, the House could not begin the speakership election until December 14 because of an election dispute in New Jersey known as the "Broad Seal War". Two rival delegations, one Whig and the other Democrat, had been certified as elected by different branches of the New Jersey government. The problem was compounded by the fact that the result of the dispute would determine whether the Whigs or the Democrats held the majority.
The Los Angeles Police Department said 93 people were arrested on suspicion of trespassing during Wednesday's demonstrations at the University of Southern California. In a dramatic setback, House Republicans fail to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas after a few GOP lawmakers refused to go along. House Speaker Mike Johnson will send articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to the Senate after Congress returns. After Tuesday’s ceremonial procession and presentation of the articles, the proceedings will not begin until Wednesday. Senators will be sworn in as jurors, turning the chamber into the court of impeachment. The Senate will then issue a summons to Mayorkas to inform him of the charges and ask for a written answer.
When Representative Chip Roy of Texas, then a freshman and now one of Mr. McCarthy’s most vocal opponents, forced roll call votes on every amendment in spending bills in 2019, the process of approving them dragged on for two weeks. But after flipping their votes to Mr. McCarthy on Friday, some of the former holdouts said they had been assured by an emerging framework, which is expected to cap the size of government funding bills, call for spending cuts and allow for amendments on the House floor. They had demanded the ability to hold a vote on the House floor for each individual earmark.
Notable elections
Two seats are vacant due to the resignations of Reps. Chris Stewart, a Republican from Utah, and David Cicilline, a Democrat from Rhode Island. "Today is the day that House Republicans will humbly look in our hearts and elect Mike Johnson as speaker of the People's House," she said. "House Democrats believe that when members of the body voted to reject the results of the 2020 election, they forfeited their ability to lead this chamber," Aguilar said. Rep. Pete Aguilar of California, chairman of the Democratic caucus, rose to nominate Jeffries for speaker and accused Republicans of manufacturing a crisis that has lasted 22 days. In a press conference with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at the White House, President Biden welcomed news of Johnson's election. "Our commitment to Israel's security is ironclad and Israel has a right to defend itself under the international rules of war against the brutal terror unleashed on its citizens by Hamas," Jeffries said.
California holds the key to GOP power in the House. McCarthy’s retirement makes everything harder
Mr. Johnson won after multiple rounds of ballots, beating out Representative Byron Donalds of Florida, a member of the Freedom Caucus. Representative Mike Johnson, a little-known social conservative from Louisiana, emerged on Tuesday night as the latest contender for the post after Representative Tom Emmer of Minnesota, the No. 3 House Republican, dropped his bid only hours after securing the nomination. Mr. Emmer’s downfall followed a swift backlash from the right, including former President Donald J. Trump, that left his candidacy in shambles and the G.O.P. as divided as ever. He once shared the story with a mostly Democratic audience at a congressional hearing on slavery reparations, and he was surprised to hear boos as he spoke, he later recounted to the Council for National Policy, an assembly of conservative donors known for its strict secrecy. Representative Steve Scalise of Louisiana, the No. 2 House Republican and the first to be nominated for speaker following Mr. McCarthy’s ouster, was ultimately seen as insufficiently pro-Trump by too many of his colleagues.
And by the end of the day, with the majority of the detractors finally coalescing around Mr. McCarthy, Mr. Gaetz appeared to have softened his tone. With Mr. McCarthy elected, he immediately turned to swearing in the 434 members of the House to officially seat the 118th Congress. Republicans announced that they would wait until Monday to consider a package of rules for the chamber, which is expected to enshrine many of the compromises Mr. McCarthy made to win his post. Mr. McCarthy, who rarely moved from his seat over the days of votes, approached Mr. Gaetz and Ms. Boebert in their seats and appeared to be pleading with them to change their votes, his signature smile wiped from his face. At one point, Representative Mike Rogers, Republican of Alabama, had to be restrained after stepping toward Mr. Gaetz.
Johnson praises former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, unceremoniously deposed three weeks ago. Says “he is the reason we are in this majority today,” a nod to his political skills. Representative Ken Buck of Colorado said that Mr. Johnson was not involved in postelection efforts to invalidate the results, even though Mr. Johnson was a critical player in those activities. “People can make mistakes and still be really good speakers,” Mr. Buck said.
Republican Reps. Paul Gosar of Arizona and Thomas Massie of Kentucky have signed on to the motion to vacate, which Greene authored but hasn't yet brought to the floor as a privileged resolution. Ryan, then just 45, was the youngest speaker in nearly 150 years but had already been party's vice presidential nominee on the 2012 ticket. Once he had Boehner's job, however, he experienced much the same internal strife. Ryan also had a strained relationship with then-President Donald Trump, with whom he had a falling out during the fall 2016 campaign.
Representative-elect Eli Crane of Arizona and Representative Matt Rosendale of Montana — the two holdouts who seemed most likely to move — both voted against him, leaving his fate in the hands of his lead tormentor, Representative Matt Gaetz of Florida. There’s a strong desire among Republicans to show a functioning House after being paralyzed for weeks following the ouster of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy. House conservatives are signaling they’ll give the newly minted House Speaker Mike Johnson some runway and flexibility as the House barrels toward a November 17 spending deadline to fund the government. GOP Rep. Stephanie Bice of Oklahoma is considering a run for conference vice chair – the leadership role previously occupied by now-Speaker Mike Johnson, according to her spokesperson. Some hard-right Republicans consider themselves a distinct political party from their more mainstream, business-minded colleagues, whom they accuse of being in a “uniparty” with Democrats. By Tuesday evening, five more Republicans, none with a national profile, were vying for the nomination.

It’s a small investment that can make a big difference in your viewing experience. Whale watching can sometimes be challenging, especially when you’re on a moving ship. The motion of the vessel can cause hand shake, making it difficult to keep your binoculars steady for clear viewing. Image stabilization technology is a game-changer in such situations. Binoculars equipped with image stabilization mechanisms help compensate for hand shake, resulting in sharper and more stable images. With image stabilization, you’ll be able to observe the intricate details of whales with ease, even when the sea is rough or your hands are unsteady.
Alaska experiences long stretches of twilight, and some wildlife viewing might occur in less-than-ideal lighting. Look for binoculars with larger objective lenses (like 42mm) that gather more light, delivering a brighter and clearer image, especially during those magical golden hours. While high magnification (like 10x or 12x) might seem tempting, it’s not ideal for a moving cruise ship. Opt for 8x magnification, which offers a good balance between bringing wildlife closer and providing a steady image. A wider field of view (around degrees) allows you to quickly scan for animals without constantly readjusting the binoculars – the best binoculars for Alaska cruise feature.
Our best for the money pick is extremely affordable, compact, and resistant to trauma and moisture. This issue is significantly more critical when the waves are strong; the boat is trembling. Many binoculars come with a diopter adjustment, usually on the right eyepiece.
